Max Vandenburg is a Jew that is in hiding from the Nazi police in order to survive in Nazi Germany. In the beginning of the novel, Max is a young twenty-four year old that had been in hiding for almost two years. Max has feather like hair and for the most part is very scrawny from malnutrition. Max, while in hiding, is very quite and doesn't like to bother anyone at all. Max feels as though he is a bother in the beginning of the novel, but soon learns to feel accepted and loved. Max has a very powerful personality, he is kind, smart, caring, and the man who stole the sky.

Max is a young man who to abandon his mother, aunt, and three cousins so that he could go into hiding. Max was given the chance to "live" by his childhood friend, Walter Kugler, who was a German soldier that loved Max too much to have him die. Max is sent to the Hubermann household with the help of Walter, Hans, and Max's mother. When max arrives to the Hubermann household, he feels awkward and unwelcomed, but that changes very soon. Max builds a very close relationship with Liesel and learns to appreciate Hans and Rosa Hubermann.
