Early Life |
Markus was born and raised in Sydney, Australia by a German mother and an Austrian father who both emigrated to Australia in late 1950s. Markus is the youngest of four, two older sisters and an older brother. Markus attended Engadine High School where he returned for a while, to teach English during the times he was writing. Markus studied English and History at the University of New South Wales, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education.

Career and Awards |
So far in his career, Zusak has written five books. The first three of Zusaks books (The Underdog, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, and When Dogs Cry) were published internationally and since then have won many awards. In 2003, Zusaks book The Messenger won the CBC Book of the Year award and the 2003 NSW Premier's Literary Award. In 2005 Zusak published The Book Thief and since then has been translated into 30 languages, sold millions of copies, has a movie adaptation, and many awards. The awards that Zusak won for The Book Thief such as the Kathleen Mitchell Award, the Ena Noel Award, and the German Youth Literature Prize.
