Liesel MemingerLiesel Meminger is the protagonist in the novel, The Book Thief. In the novel The Book Thief Liesel experiences many difficulties in her life. She is seen by Death one day and catches his interest. Death, as the narrator of the novel, dedicates his spare time during a certain time period to talk about those said experiences of Liesel. The novel follows Liesel as she is taken to a new family, learns the meaning of words, and hides a jew in Nazi Germany.

Liesel Meminger is a very quiet, but clever young girl. She has a very calm personality, but when under pressure, or in extreme emotions, she will explode out of her quite and calm nature. She is kind, big-hearted, and of course a book thief. Liesel was born in the year 1929 in Germany. She has blond hair and brown eyes. Her eyes are referred to as "dangerous eyes" because they are brown like the color of jewish eyes.

In the beginning of the novel, Liesel is on a train with her mother and brother. Liesels brother dies on the trian ride on a snowy January morning. On the day that Liesels brother dies, it is also the last time she see her mother. Liesel is given to Hans and Rosa Hubermann and as time passes she learns to love and appreciate them. Liesel meets Rudy Steiner and he becomes her first friend and first love. During Liesels time living with the Hubermann she meets a Jew named Max Vandenburg and easily befriends him because of their similar backgrounds. Liesel meets many other characters in the span of four years, from which the novel is based on, and they all play roles in her life to make her the person she ends up becoming.
