Hans HubermannHans Hubermann is the father figure that is presented in the novel The Book Thief. Hans and his wife Rose take in Liesel as their own after the death of her mother and brother. He is an important person in Liesel's life. He teaches her and encourages her to do things, and for the first time she makes a friend.

Hans Hubermann takes in Liesel as a foster child. He is married to Rose Hubermann and they have an older son that is very Nazi oriented after being away for such a long time. He spends a lot of time with Liesel and teaches her to read and roll cigarettes. He is a painter, plays the Accordian, and does not agree with the Nazi party.

After meeting and getting to know Liesel, he is seen as this loving man who cares so much about her. At first he doesn't give much of a first impression but afterward he starts to teach her how to do things such as paint and read and roll cigarettes. He shows her right from wrong and helps her every time she gets her nightmares and has an accident. Death himself says that Hans is the one that Liesel loves the most.
